Visiting Japan or Want To? Discover the Side Most Tourists Never See.
Japan has been on my personal travel list for a long time.
I’ve always been drawn to Japanese culture - the beauty, the attention to detail, the traditions, the design, the food, and the way centuries of history seem to exist right alongside the modern world.
So when I started working with Pam Woldow on Zen Gaijin™, I was fascinated.
Her relationship with the country began more than five decades ago when, at 20, a serious knee injury abruptly ended her career as a principal dancer in New York.
So…she went to Japan.
What began as a dramatic turn in her life became a lifelong relationship with the country.
Over the decades, Pam has lived, worked, and studied in Japan. She and her husband, Doug, return again and again, exploring far beyond the places most visitors ever see.
And as someone who dreams of experiencing Japan myself, I kept thinking:
This is the Japan I want to know.
I want to know the quiet discoveries. The traditions you might walk right past if no one told you they were there. The neighborhoods, museums, regions, and experiences that reveal something deeper about the country.
Eventually, all of Pam and Doug’s accumulated experiences needed somewhere to live.
That became Zen Gaijin™.
It isn’t another collection of “10 Things You Must Do in Japan.”
Pam and Doug created Zen Gaijin™ for curious travelers who want to go deeper - to discover the places, traditions, experiences, and little surprises hiding beyond the usual itinerary.

Hidden in an older Tokyo neighborhood is a centuries-old Buddhist fire ritual filled with chanting, taiko drums, and an experience dramatically different from Shibuya crossings and Ginza storefronts.
The Japan north of the usual tourist trail
In Tohoku, autumn temples, cedar forests, small towns, and extraordinary landscapes can still be experienced without the crowds that have transformed many of Japan’s best-known destinations.
But from writing their love for Japan in Zen Gaijin™ their blog has turned into something far more valuable.
Their blog is now a trusted resource for the practical things Western travelers need to understand before they ever leave home.

At 75 years old, Doug published his first novel.
His debut thriller, Down Wind and Out of Sight, went on to earn multiple literary honors. He continued writing the Victor Harding Adventures — smart, character-driven crime fiction built around a refreshing idea:
Adventure doesn’t have a retirement age.
Doug’s work has now earned seven literary awards.
Pam and Doug are a dynamic duo, and working with them and helping bring these very different parts of their lives online has taught me a lot about why I love what I do.
Yes, I build websites for businesses that need to generate leads, establish authority, get discovered in search, and help companies grow.
But sometimes a website is about something else.
Sometimes someone comes to me with an idea they’ve been carrying for years:
A book they finally wrote.
A lifetime of knowledge they want to share.
A place they can’t stop exploring.
A creative pursuit.
A second act.
A dream that has been living inside them but hasn’t quite found its way into the world yet.
One of the things I love most about my work is uncovering that bigger idea - sometimes even helping the person on the other side of the table see how much possibility is really there.
We give it shape.
We give it a voice.
And we build somewhere for it to live.
That’s the magic part of Studio Magic. 😊
